“NCBA's Dr. Elizabeth Parker: FDA Postpones New Feed Ban Rule”

The FDA recently announced that it will delay by 60 days the implementation of proposed regulations to create additional livestock feed ban restrictions. Many in the industry are concerned this Enhanced Feed Ban is being implemented without regard to viable alternatives for the safe and economical disposal of dead livestock.

Since 1997, the U.S. has prohibited ruminant feed from including parts of other ruminants. Under the new enhanced feed ban, these materials would be prohibited from all animal feed. According to Dr. Parker, the current U.S. feed ban—combined with a variety of other government and industry safeguards—has proven to be highly successful, and these additional restrictions are not needed.

The FDA estimated the new rule will cost producers $28 – 39 million per year, and will generate an additional 28 million pounds of cattle-derived waste with little options for disposal.
