NCBA Audio Clip: Final rule expected soon on expanded beef trade with Canada
A final rule expanding cattle and beef trade with Canada is expected to be released by USDA within the next few days. In the following National Cattlemen’s Beef Association audio clip, Chief Executive Officer Terry Stokes explains that NCBA has been working to improve this rule because the ultimate goal is to enable U.S. producers to profit from selling cattle and beef in the global marketplace.

NCBA identified several areas of concern when the draft rule was issued by USDA earlier this year. Because four of Canada’s ten BSE cases occurred after the proposed feed ban date (March 1, 1999), NCBA has urged USDA to consider a lower age limit for live cattle imports. NCBA has also requested that measures be taken to minimize any disruption of the U.S. cattle market as the rule is implemented. Among the requests is that only beef from cattle slaughtered after the rule’s effected date be approved for import.
