BEEF CHECKOFF ANNOUNCES 15th ANNUAL BUILD A BETTER BURGER® CONTEST

Nationwide Contest is Part of 2005 Summer Grilling Promotion

DENVER (March 22, 2005) – In honor of “America’s Favorite Sandwich,” the Beef Checkoff Program is pleased to join Sutter Home Family Vineyards in sponsoring the 15th annual Build a Better Burger® contest. The creator of this year’s winning beef burger recipe will receive a $50,000 cash prize.

Fifteen years ago, Sutter Home’s Build a Better Burger contest was introduced to burger devotees across the nation, encouraging them to develop their best burger recipes. The partnership with Sutter Home for the contest is just one component of the beef checkoff’s Summer Grilling promotion, which launches in May. The checkoff sponsorship is coordinated on behalf of the Cattlemen’s Beef Board and state beef councils by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA). The NCBA serves as one of the Beef Board’s contractors for checkoff-funded programs.

“Once again, we’re delighted to work with Sutter Home on this program that generates enthusiasm around the burger and helps grow demand for America’s No. 1 protein,” said Randy Irion, director of retail marketing at NCBA. “We recognize the value of participating in Sutter Home’s Build a Better Burger contest, since it creates excitement for the grilling season at both the retail and consumer levels.”

The contest is being touted at the retail level with in-store displays, which last year appeared in more than 1,600 supermarkets nationwide, encouraging consumers to enter their favorite burger recipes. In 2004, the contest garnered more the 4,300 contestants.

Other elements of the checkoff’s Summer Grilling Promotion in 2005 include retailer-tagged radio spots in 43 markets, $1 off savings coupons in Sunday newspaper inserts and pallet-ready displays featuring beef grilling guides. The partnership with Sutter Home for the Build a Better Burger contest is another example of how the beef industry seeks out partnerships that give consumers one more reason to grill burgers this summer.

“After 15 years, the Build a Better Burger contest is still going strong, and we’re pleased to feature our wines alongside the ever-popular burger,” said Wendy Nyberg, senior director of marketing, Sutter Home Winery. “Whether consumers prefer a Sauvingon Blanc or Merlot with their own burger creations, we’re happy to participate in this partnership that features what we think is a tasty combination.”

Consumers may submit entries for the Build a Better Burger contest between May 30 and August 26, 2005, either online or by mail. For contest categories, guidelines, prizes and judging information visit the contest Web site at: www.BuildaBetterBurger.com.

Americans love to fire up the grill for almost any occasion, from backyard barbecues to tailgating parties. No matter what the grilling occasion, burgers are the most frequently chosen fare. In fact, hamburger is the most popular food for the grill, followed by steak and chicken. One out of every five times Americans fire up the grill, it’s to cook a hamburger, according to NPD National Eating Trends Research, 2003.

The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.

Producer-directed and consumer-focused, the NCBA is the trade association of America's cattle farmers and ranchers, and the marketing organization for the largest segment of the nation's food and fiber industry.
