BEEF COLOR FEATURE #1 FOR 1997
DENVER, February 1998 – Seasonal Celebrations, the holiday color feature produced by the National Cattlemen's Beef Association and the Horseradish Information Council, will be the #1 feature in Family Features Editorial Services top 20 features of 1997. With an ordering circulation of 12,933,874, Seasonal Celebrations is one of the most well received Family Features pages of all time.
Seasonal Celebrations is unique in that it showcased two complete features each with a different theme on the same page. Both stories highlighted beef in the recipes and photos: Herb-Crusted Beef Rib Roast for Christmas and Beef Brisket with Horseradish Sauce for Hanukkah.
Before beginning the page, in early June 1997, key editors were contacted to discuss the potential Christmas or Hanukkah theme both of which were known to be topics of interest to editors. Based on their comments, the less traditional but very successful split page format was decided upon. The page was first released to editors in early September 1997.
Newspaper editors liked the versatility of the page; it could be used as a full page, or separately as two features. In addition, editors noted the excellent recipes and photography, and the complementary partners (beef and horseradish) as reasons they selected this feature.
Other page highlights included:
- Placements were made in 45 states plus the District of Columbia for a total of 319 newspapers.
- The page exceeded its 8 million circulation goal by more than 4.9 million.
- 55 percent of the scheduled circulation was generated by 51 placements in newspapers with circulations of 50,000+ including Rocky Mountain News (Denver), Gazette (Colorado Springs), World Herald (Omaha), The Charlotte Observer (Charlotte, NC), Times Union (Jacksonville, FL) and Record (Hackensack, NJ).
