Dec. 8, 2004 Cattlemen’s Atty. Reflects on Checkoff Oral Arguments: Garre

The US Supreme Court heard oral arguments today on an appeal of a lower court ruling that found the Beef Checkoff Program unconstitutional. Attorney Greg Garre presented arguments in the case in support of the beef checkoff. Garre noted important distinctions between this case and an earlier case (United Foods) in which the high court struck down a portion of the mushroom checkoff.

Cut #1    :31  Outcue: "...a great deal more important."

Garre felt the oral arguments went well, and felt encouraged by today’s proceedings.

Cut #2    :23  Outcue: "...best that we can ask for."

Garre also emphasized the importance of the Beef Checkoff Program, and noted the advantages of arguing for a worthy cause.

Cut #3    :12 Outcue: "...program is so important.”
