Director, Channel Promotions

Reports To:  Executive Director, Channel Marketing (EDCM)

Location:  National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) Headquarters, Denver, Colorado

General Responsibilities:  The Director, Channel Promotions will work closely with the Executive Director(s), Retail, Foodservice and Veal Marketing to implement the industry’s strategy for increasing beef and veal demand in the retail and foodservice channels. This person will assist in developing and implementing promotion initiatives that support beef and veal strategic objectives in the channels. He/she will lead in the communication of associated activities with Food Industry Partners, State Beef Councils (SBCs), Packers/Processors, Supermarket Retailers, Foodservice Operators and Industry Organizations on behalf of the NCBA Channel Marketing Team (CMT). Responsibilities will be executed based upon the beef industry’s Long Range Plan, the strategies identified in the NCBA Operating Plan and tactics specified in the Authorization Request(s) approved for retail, foodservice and veal marketing. 

Specific Responsibilities:  

  • Food Industry Partners
    • Identify promotional opportunities with food and beverage companies that are synergistic with beef and maximize/extend the Checkoff investment.
    • Secure partner promotion agreements, contracts and work orders.
    • Manage the development and production of all promotional marketing aids.
    • Obtain measurable data and/or relevant information to evaluate the performance of the promotions and their success in building demand.
    • Annually review, maintain/refresh or discontinue existing promotions.
  • Federation of State Beef Councils 
    • Serve as the information source on channel marketing promotions with State Beef Councils (SBCs) working to assist them with the execution and extension of marketing plans aligned with national promotions.
    • Identify opportunities with the SBCs to develop and fund joint marketing promotions for supermarket retailers and foodservice operators.
  • Packers/Processors
    • Serve as an information source on channel marketing promotions to the marketing departments of the major beef Packers/Processors.
  • Channel Marketing
    • Serve as a representative and information resource on beef and veal marketing promotions to the decision makers of the leading companies and trade organizations in the retail and foodservice channels.
    • Participate in top-to-top meetings with the sales and marketing departments of packer/processors, supermarket retailers and foodservice operators to promote Checkoff funded marketing activities.
    • Develop and execute beef marketing promotions that keep beef top of mind with consumers and maintain a competitive position in the channel.
    • Coordinate and execute activities and budgets relating to specific Authorization Request tactics and performance measures.
    • Provide channel marketing and SBC staff with the training and marketing tools necessary to implement national promotions with industry partners.
    • Coordinate activities with the Executive Director(s), Retail, Foodservice and Veal Marketing on marketing opportunities in targeted markets and/or with targeted channel partners.
  • NCBA Organization
    • Work with other NCBA program areas and locations as needed.
    • Assist EDCM by taking on assignments and special projects as needed.
    • Manage designated agencies in an effective and cost efficient manner.
    • Support NCBA’s strategic plan and manage the budgets for joint-promotion activities.
    • Work with EDCM to establish and report on annual Individual Action Plans.
    • Assist in revenue development strategies and opportunities.
    • Follow Beef Checkoff acknowledgement guidelines.
    • Adhere to NCBA organization policies and procedures.

Qualifications and Key Skills: The ideal candidate for this position will possess:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing or related field and 7+ years equivalent retail or CPG marketing experience
  • Thorough understanding of the food industry
    • Feels passionately about the beef and veal industry and has the ability to be a strong advocate for the promotion and consumption of its products
  • Knowledge of retail supermarket or CPG marketing promotions is required with a demonstrable track record of success
    • Experience in Foodservice marketing is a plus
  • High level of professionalism; trustworthiness, dependable and motivated
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong negotiation skills are essential
  • Ability to collaborate and cooperate with diverse groups of people from all sectors of the beef industry, i.e. producers, packer/processors, wholesale distributors, supermarket retailers and foodservice operators
  • Desire to seek out new opportunities and improve upon the status quo
  • Ability to execute contracts, manage budgets and evaluate performance
    • Experience in managing an agency is a plus
  • Skills necessary to organize and lead productive meetings
  • Self-starter capable of multi tasking
  • This individual will be evaluated on the results of work performed and will be encouraged to grow within the department as well as within the organization.
  • Computer proficiency including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint

Travel Requirements:

  • Overnight travel is required for this position
  • Travel will vary from 25% to 50%
  • May require travel and/or work on weekends
  • Must live in Denver metro area
