Already frustrated from the lack of Congressional action on drought relief, cattlemen have renewed their lobbying efforts for federal disaster assistance in light of the devastating losses to the livestock industry caused by recent winter storms. Jason Jordan, manager of legislative affairs for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, explains that the current budget situation makes this an uphill battle.

Jordan said news coverage of the winter storm damage may help convince Congress of the need for relief.

He noted that part of the frustration is the difficulty of gathering accurate damage and loss totals, given the volume of snow, prolonged power outages, and other difficulties.

As a native of one of the hardest-hit areas, Jordan sees the challenges of his family, friends and neighbors as they struggle to recover from the storm.
