A 50-month-old dairy cow in Alberta tested positive for BSE this week. While this is no cause for alarm by consumers, NCBA CEO Terry Stokes says the situation will be monitoring carefully because of the relatively young age of the animal involved.

Stokes says NCBA current policy only supports cattle and beef imports from Canada which are 30 months of age and younger, and the association does not question the safety of these imports. However, it is important that this situation not be allowed to negatively impact global trade or create a negative international reaction.
