MANAGER, LEGISLATIVE AFFAIRS

Reports:         Executive Director, Legislative Affairs
(based in DC office)

General responsibilities:

Assists the Legislative Affairs team on matters and issues pertaining to the Legislative Branch. The Manager will focus on the environment, conservation, trade and ethanol. Develops professional relationships with members and staff of Congress, professional organizations and other groups involved in or impacting the business climate and demand for beef.

Specific Responsibilities:

·        Develops, maintains and enhances relationships with appropriate persons to advance the policies of the association and further improve the business climate for cattle producers

·        Evaluates and analyzes legislation to determine impact on industry, and seeks additional expertise when necessary

·        Coordinates communication activities with communications and membership staff

·        Writes letters, position statements, testimony and other correspondence

·        Completes spokesperson training and other job training activities required

·        Attends daily/weekly meetings, hearings and other events

·        Staffs Committee(s) and prepares for annual and summer meetings by arranging speakers, developing meeting agendas and coordinating committee activity with association leadership and staff

·        Travels to annual and summer meetings, state meetings and other meetings to discuss association activities, outlook and policy

·        Attends PAC meetings and fundraising events

·        Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

A Bachelors Degree in Public Policy, Political Science or Agriculture preferred. Minimum 2 years legislative or related experience required. Excellent writing skills, communication skills and people skills. Solid understanding of the political process including how to lobby necessary for success in this position. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to handle multiple projects and initiatives in a fast-paced environment.
