South Korean officials have announced a June 7 date for resumption of U.S. beef imports. South Korea was once the #3 export market for U.S. beef, importing over $800 million worth in 2003. Terry Stokes, CEO of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, said that while this is great news for U.S. cattlemen, much work remains if U.S. market share is to be fully recovered.

Stokes said continued negotiations for approval of bone-in beef is a top priority for NCBA.

Cut #2         :09          Outcue: "...its full potential."

He added that another important factor in regaining export market share in South Korea will be drastic reduction of the excessive tariffs currently faced by U.S. beef. This will be NCBA’s top priority in upcoming Free Trade Agreement negotiations with South Korea.

Cut #3         :36          Outcue: "...available to more consumers."
