Hurricane Relief Efforts

September 19, 2005

Been There – Having experienced the devastation of last year’s hurricanes and the support of other producers, cattlemen in Alabama and Florida have opened their hearts and wallets to help fellow producers in Mississippi and Louisiana devastated by Katrina.  Both the Alabama Cattlemen's Association and the Florida Cattlemen's Association have given $7,500 to the Mississippi Cattlemen’s Foundation for disaster relief efforts.

Alabama Cattlemen’s Association officers Max Bozeman, Ned Ellis and Perry Debter are shown presenting a check for $7,500 to Mississippi Cattlemen’s Foundation board member Dr. Jim Anderson and NCBA area representative Melanie Sojourner.  Florida Cattlemen’s Association also contributed $7,500 to the Foundation to provide relief to cattlemen affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Cattlemen Helping Cattlemen - This week, the Mississippi Cattlemen’s Foundation (MCF) will distribute $30,000 in “fencing certificates” to help rebuild facilities destroyed by millions of trees felled during Hurricane Katrina.  “We appreciate everyone who has helped and assure you that your contributions to the Katrina Relief Fund will go to producers affected by the storm,” says Foundation President Ted Kendall.  Administrative costs will be covered by MCF so all contributions will directly benefit those impacted by the effects of Katrina.
In addition to fencing certificates, contributions have been used to buy chain saws for county cattlemen’s associations to share with their members during the long cleanup effort ahead. Donations can be sent to MCF, 680 Monroe St., Jackson, MS 39202.

Beefing Up The Volunteers - Pictured with Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers are Phil Slay, Glenn Pigott, Joe Magee, Holton King and Tony Thames.  The cattlemen served ribeye steak sandwiches to chain saw crews and other volunteers from Michigan, Tennessee and California who spent the week working in South Mississippi.

Beef for Storm Victims - Missouri-based Heartland Farms on Tuesday began shipping canned beef to the area impacted by the storm. More than 20,000 cans of cooked ground beef and canned stew were sent to Salvation Army feeding operations in Biloxi and Jackson, Miss., as part of a coordinated effort led by the National Cattlemen's Beef Association.
