Nov. 14, 2003 - Beef Board Members Keeping an Eye on the Ball

Suggested Lead:

With all the issues in the cattle industry these days, it would be easy for industry leaders to lack focus on those that are most important to producer profitability.  Alan Svajgr (swagger) is secretary treasurer of the Cattlemen’s Beef Board and a beef producer from Cozad, Nebraska.  He says the 108 members of the board are keeping their eye on the ball.

Cut #1    :24       Outcue: "...have a safe product."

Svajgr says it’s been true since the Beef Board was formed through the Farm Bill in 1985.

Cut #2    :14       Outcue: "...across all segments."

According to Svajgr, all producers are responsible for communicating effectively.

Cut #3    :20       Outcue: "...how they’re spent wisely."

Svajgr says evidence of checkoff results is all around us.

Cut #4    :14       Outcue: "...lending to our profitability."

The mandatory $1-per-head beef checkoff is administered by the Beef Board, subject to USDA approval.  The checkoff Act and Order, part of the 1985 Farm Bill, was approved by 79 percent of producers in a 1988 referendum.
