Nov. 17, 2003 - Former Beef Board Chairman Identifies Program Pluses

Suggested Lead:

Seven years ago Jan Lyons served as chairman of the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board.  Lyons is a beef producer from Manhattan, Kansas.  She says one of the areas she has been pleased to see addressed with beef checkoff dollars is nutrition.

Cut #1    :21       Outcue: "...what is not real."

According to Lyons, checkoff programs remain effective by cooperating with other organizations.

Cut #2    :25       Outcue: "...to those people."

Lyons says her time in leadership positions has provided a good perspective from which to review what’s happening with the checkoff.

Cut #3    :21       Outcue: "...dollars is good."

The checkoff landscape is not limited to nutrition or promotion.

Cut #4    :24       Outcue: "...are going on."

The mandatory $1-per-head beef checkoff is administered by the Beef Board, subject to USDA approval.  The checkoff Act and Order, part of the 1985 Farm Bill, was approved by 79 percent of producers in a 1988 referendum.
