Nov. 26, 2003 - Challenges to Mandatory COOL Remain

Suggested Lead:

Despite a 2-year delay in the implementation of Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling, the questions about the law remain.  Jim McAdams, vice president of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, says that while country of origin labeling is widely accepted, the form it takes is not.

McAdams, a cattle producer from Adkins, Texas, says the track record for government run and mandated programs is not good.

Cut #2    :36       Outcue: "...of a superior product."

According to McAdams, the quickly-approaching implementation date was of concern to many producers.

Cut #3    :21       Outcue: "...the value will be."

The numbers were just not adding up.

Cut #4    :22       Outcue: "...actual product moved."

Under the new bill, the country of origin labeling law is scheduled to take effect on Sept. 30, 2006.
