Nov. 3, 2003 - Stay in Checkoff Ruling Positive Sign, CBB COO Says
Suggested Lead:
When the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals stayed its decision against the beef checkoff and allowed collections to continue, it was a positive step forward for the industry. So says Monte Reese, chief operating officer for the Cattlemen’s Beef Board, who believes the signal that two government agencies will take this case further is good for cattle producers.
Cut #1 :30 Outcue: "...gets a free ride."
Reese has an analogy for this entire litigation process.
Cut #2 :22 Outcue: "...arguing in the courtroom."
The timeline is by no means in stone, but at least is established.
Cut #3 :25 Outcue: "...makes a final decision."
According to Reese, the timing of the final decision depends somewhat on the speed at which the next step is taken by the Department of Justice.
Cut #4 :19 Outcue: "...the summer of 2005."
The $1-per-head beef checkoff is administered by the Cattlemen’s Beef Board, with oversight by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Board has 108 volunteer producer members who are appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture.
