Nov. 8, 2004- Operation BEEF UP Our Troops’ Will Provide Beef Jerky

“Operation BEEF UP Our Troops” is an effort by the beef industry and the USO (United Service Organizations) to provide high-quality beef jerky to U.S. forces serving overseas. Beef jerky is one of the most frequently requested food items by U.S. troops. Heather Buckmaster, Marketing Director for the Colorado Beef Council explains.

Convenience and nutrition are cited as two of the main reasons that beef jerky is so popular with U.S. troops.

A previous promotion funded by the Beef Checkoff Program actually helped lay the groundwork for “Operation BEEF UP Our Troops”, by establishing a working relationship between the Colorado Beef Council and the USO.

While the program originated with the Colorado Beef Council, Buckmaster feels that the nationwide response will be strong.

Contributors should donate cash, as direct product donations cannot be accepted.

However, troops will know that the beef jerky purchased through the program was donated by America’s farming and ranching families.

The national Beef Checkoff Program is administered by the Cattlemen’s Beef Board, a group of 108 beef producers nominated by the Secretary of Agriculture.  They represent producers from coast-to-coast and volunteer their time to help identify programs that can help increase beef demand.  The checkoff was created in the 1985 Farm Bill, with oversight provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
