BEEF NEWS/NATIONAL CATTLEMEN'S BEEF ASSOCIATION AUDIO INTERVIEW
Wednesday, November 21, 2007

National Cattlemen’s Beef Association CEO Terry Stokes recently traveled to key Asian export markets as part of a delegation organized by the U.S. Meat Export Federation. Stokes says his meetings with Asian officials presented a great opportunity to provide quality information about U.S. beef.

Cut #1          :27          Outcue: "...wider access for our products."

Stokes expressed frustration at the current beef trade stalemate with South Korea, but says Korean officials seem to understand the importance of resuming trade.

Cut #2          :34          Outcue: "...fair and reliable."

Demand for U.S. beef is strong in Japan, but the range of products allowed is extremely limited. Stokes says he expects Japan to loosen its restrictions, but progress has been slow.

Cut #3          :25          Outcue: "...as quickly as we like."

China holds tremendous potential as an export market, but Stokes says we have to stop allowing China to “have it both ways” when it comes to trade.

Cut #4          :48          Outcue: "...fully open this market."

Overall, Stokes’ travels confirmed how important these markets are to the future of the U.S. beef industry. But fair terms of trade are critical, if these markets are going to be profitable.

Cut #5          :21          Outcue: "...and international standards."
