Oct. 20, 2003 -Dietary Guideline Committee Must Grapple With Complex Issues

The 13 members of the government’s new dietary guideline advisory committee will work to come up with national recommendations for Americans by 2005.  According to Leah Wilkinson, associate director for food policy at the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, their job won’t be easy.

Cut #1    :30       Outcue: "...the majority of Americans."

Wilkinson says the NCBA will join other groups and individuals in making recommendations to the committee.

Cut #2    :17       Outcue: "...for the committee’s review."

According to Wilkinson, among the comments the NCBA will make is that beef fits very well within a balanced and varied diet, and that while diets can be good or bad, foods are complex.

Cut #3    :14       Outcue: "...for a healthy life."

Wilkinson says one of those nutrient dense foods is beef, which calorie-for-calorie is an excellent source of zinc, iron, protein and many other nutrients.
