The budget for the national Beef Checkoff Program’s 2005 fiscal year was finalized in late September, when the Beef Promotion Operating Committee met to match national funding with proposed programs. Jim McAdams, a Texas beef producer who serves as president-elect of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, attended the meeting. He says this was a crucial session.

Half of the Operating Committee’s 20 members are nominated by the Cattlemen’s Beef Board, and half are nominated by the Federation of State Beef Councils, a division of the NCBA. McAdams says the representatives who serve on the Committee do so as volunteers, and take their roles seriously.

The Beef Promotion Operating Committee met in Denver Sept. 23 and 24 to finalize the program of work for the national Beef Checkoff Program fiscal year, which began Oct. 1.
The National Beef Checkoff Program is administered by the Cattlemen’s Beef Board, a group of 108 beef producers from across the country who volunteer their time to help identify programs that can increase beef demand. It was created in the 1985 Farm Bill, with oversight provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
