This week the Beef Checkoff Program and Dominos Pizza announced a joint promotion of the Steak Fanatic Pizza. Sid Sumner, a Florida beef producer who chairs checkoff’s Joint Foodservice Committee says this type of partnership is critical to successfully promoting beef.

Sumner says the committee has had excellent success in encouraging restaurant partners to put money toward beef promotions, which means beef gets tremendous exposure and visibility while spending relatively few checkoff dollars.

Sumner said development of high-quality, economical cuts of beef have been especially attractive to the foodservice industry, and every successful promotion beings new interest from potential partners.

He added that with changing consumer tastes and habits, the Joint Foodservice Committee plays a very key role in promoting beef wisely and effectively.

The Steak Fanatic Pizza features tender steak, mushrooms, fire-roasted onions and provolone cheese. A medium Steak Fanatic Pizza sells for $9.99, and customers have the option to "Heap it On" by adding an extra helping of steak for $2 more. This is the second partnership between the Beef Checkoff Program and Domino’s Pizza. In 2003, they successfully joined forces on Domino’s Philly Cheese Steak Pizza.

The national Beef Checkoff Program is administered by the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, a group of 108 beef producers appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture. They represent producers from coast-to-coast and volunteer their time to help identify programs that can help increase beef demand. The checkoff was created in the 1985 Farm Bill, with oversight provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle and a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents to the Cattlemen’s Beef Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.
