Thurs.,Dec 5 02 - Cattlemen’s Land Trusts Can Help Preserve Family Ranching
Some ranching families should consider conservation easements held by Cattlemen’s Land Trusts as a means to preserve their family ranches, says Sid Goodloe. Goodloe ranches near Capitan, New Mexico and was 1994 winner of the Region VI Environmental Stewardship Award. Goodloe says interest in conservation easements is rising as ranchers struggle to resist the temptation of selling their land to developers.
Cut #1 :38 Outcue: "...to manage the land."
According to Goodloe, conservation easements aren’t for everyone and should be approached with caution.
Cut #2 :28 Outcue: "...know what you’re doing."
Goodloe says land trusts and conservation easements are misunderstood by those who don’t recognize their potential for helping people continue in family ranching.
Cut #3 :41 Outcue: "...ample legal advice."
Goodloe says the National Cattlemen's Beef Association and Colorado Cattlemen’s Agricultural Land Trust recently sponsored a two-day workshop to examine how ranch-oriented land trusts can help landowners cope with estate taxes and encroaching development.
