Trade Negotiators Press for Trade Reform

A joint press conference today between the USDA and the U.S. Trade Representative made it clear that the U.S. plans to be a major player when WTO Agriculture negotiations take place next week in Geneva.  According to Chuck Lambert, chief economist for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, the U.S. will submit a proposal that U.S. producers should welcome.

Cut #1    :20       Outcue: "...more level playing field."

Lambert says the proposal will help eliminate trade barriers.

Cut #2    :19       Outcue: "...the maximum allowable."

According to Lambert, the NCBA has members on key congressional advisory committees, and also plays a major role in other ways in D.C.

Cut #3    :29       Outcue: "...into these negotiations."

Lambert says the export market remains a very important part of agriculture and is critical to beef producers.

Cut #4    :27       Outcue: "...increased disposable income."

According to Lambert, Trade Promotion Authority is part of the effort to improved U.S. agricultural trade policy.  Legislation now in Conference, and it’s hopeful it will be out by the time Congress adjourns for the August recess.
