Associate Director, Market Intelligence

Location: National Cattlemen's Beef Association, Denver Office
Reports to: Vice President, Strategic Planning and Market Research

General Responsibilities:
The Associate Director, Market Intelligence will work within the Market Research & Strategic Planning and support the Integrated Communications teams by providing ongoing market and channel analysis and perspective.  This will involve monitoring market conditions, identifying and communicating trends and measuring beef performance/volumetrics in the retail and foodservice channels.  This person serves as the lead resource for channel performance and beef sales information to state beef councils, retail/foodservice operators and other industry partners.  This position will require a highly cooperative relationship with the Strategic Account Managers and NCBA checkoff staff in other program areas (e.g., public relations, communications).  Responsibilities will be executed in accordance with the beef industry’s Long Range Plan, the strategies identified in the NCBA Strategic Plan, and the tactics specified in the Authorization Requests approved for Market Research and Integrated Communications.

Specific Responsibilities:

Integrated Communications (Market Intelligence) – PRIMARY FOCUS

• Monitor current market conditions and economic factors affecting beef demand and the 
    business climate of retail and foodservice operations
        o  This will require a high degree of familiarity with a number of data bases and an ability to 
            quickly mine data and provide insights to a variety of key stakeholders
• Manage, analyze and update retail scanner sales data and featuring activity, providing internal 
    staff with key insights related to trends and opportunities in the channels that support increased 
    beef sales
• Develop business proposition information/insights to highlight the value of beef  to retail and 
    foodservice operations
• Communicate industry information analysis/insight to state beef council partners and integrated 
    communication team using most effective methods and tools including websites, e-newsletters 
    or focused presentations/briefings
• Serve as lead resource for beef pricing, supply/demand factors and market performance insight 
    to integrated communications PR staff and other checkoff programs areas; engage and 
    communicate key findings with outside parties or media either proactively or in response to ad 
    hoc inquiries
• Maintain and organize all internal market intelligence resources to optimize rapid access to, and 
    response with, relevant information
• Monitor news feeds and create abstracts of pertinent articles of interest to the beef community

Market Research & Strategic Planning – SECONDARY FOCUS
• Serve as a resource to the Market Research and Strategic Planning group
• Provide market perspective to enhance design and resulting insights from custom research 
• Support the VP Market Research & Strategic Planning with plan direction and outcomes
• Serve as the resident expert on all syndicated, secondary or primary data sources that support 
    the integrated communications responsibilities noted above – examples include in-home beef 
    usage data, store audits and consumer attitudes related to delivery channels. 
• Collaborate with other beef checkoff program areas to develop and disseminate relevant 
    consumer and market information, used for strategic planning or program execution purposes

• Coordinate and execute activities and budgets relating to specific Authorization Request tactics 
    and performance measures assigned for this position
• Work with sub-contractors and data vendors to assure that work adheres to contract 
    agreements, that budget is properly managed and controlled, and all plans are implemented as 
• Participate at selected conventions, conferences and state meetings throughout the year
• Comply with beef checkoff acknowledgement criteria
• Comply with USDA and Cattlemen’s Beef Board (CBB) regulations and guidelines
• Comply with NCBA organization policies and procedures
• Be an active, engaged participant in communications training programs and relationship 
    management software (CRM).

Qualifications and Key Skills:
The ideal candidate for this position will possess:
• A bachelor’s degree or higher in Business, Marketing or related field and/or 5+ years 
    equivalent experience in the retail and/or foodservice industries; direct experience in meat 
    procurement a plus
        o Degree or higher in animal science or related agricultural area of study preferred
• Thorough understanding of the food/meat industry and related business climate
        o Willing to be a strong advocate for the promotion and consumption of its products
• Thorough understanding of economic and market factors affecting beef pricing, supply and 
    consumer demand
• Knowledge of retail and/or foodservice operations including experience in the merchandising 
    and marketing of beef with a demonstrated track record of success
        o Recent experience in the retail or foodservice industries in a sales data and pricing analysis 
            position a plus
        o Experience with packer/processor operations a plus
• Ability to serve as a mentor/mentee to NCBA and SBC staff  and work as part of a team
• High level of professionalism, trustworthiness, dependability and motivation
• Excellent communication skills including both written and oral
• Ability to collaborate and cooperate with diverse groups of people from all sectors of the beef 
    industry, i.e. producers, packer/processors, wholesalers and channel operators
        o Trade association experience is a plus
• Ability to execute contracts, manage budgets and evaluate performance
        o Experience in managing subcontractors and/or consultants a plus
• Strong ability to organize and lead productive meetings
• Self-starter capable of or working on and leading several projects simultaneously
• Desire to accept challenges and improve upon the status quo
• Advanced computer proficiency including Word, Excel, Outlook, Access and PowerPoint.  
    Ability to utilize various online query tools, and repurpose data for a range of audiences.

Travel Requirements:
• Overnight travel is required for this position
• Travel will vary from 25% to 50%
• May require travel and/or work on weekends
