As you know, the U.S. Department of Agriculture yesterday, April 24, 2012, confirmed an atypical case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in a dairy cow in central California.

We do not know every single detail at this point. However, according to Dr. Guy Loneragan, epidemiologist and professor of food safety and public health at Texas Tech University, we know enough to remain absolutely confident in the safety of U.S. beef.

This latest case of BSE, according to Loneragan, is further evidence that the U.S. protocols in place to prevent BSE from taking hold in the United States are working and working well. If you want more information about BSE, visit
