 Opening General Session

Tuesday, February 4 - 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Sponsored by Boehringher Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc.
“Steering Your Ship Through Rough Waters: Lessons on Leadership”

Kicking off the 2014 Cattle Industry Annual Convention is the Opening General Session, featuring captivating speakers and important introductory remarks. Always a meeting favorite, the Opening General Session provides a motivating and inspirational foundation for discussions and presentations to follow.

Keynoting the session is Captain Richard Phillips, the inspiration for the movie Captain Phillips, starring Tom Hanks. The movie is based on Phillip's book "A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy Seals and Dangerous Days at Sea," a fascinating and suspensful recounting of the first hijacking of a U.S. ship in more than 200 years. It's also the unbelievable story of a regular man who found the courage to lead his ship and save his crew while besieged by Somali pirates for 5 days. Phillips not only shares his compelling story as a “floating CEO” in charge of the day-to-day operations of a multi-million dollar ship and its crew, he also draws lessons from the dramatic events that can help you survive and thrive. He will discuss the vital importance of leadership and teamwork, combined with a belief in the power and potential of yourself and your team, as seen through the eyes of an unassuming hero who conquered one of the world’s most extraordinary challenges.

General Session II

Thursday, February 6 - 9:30 am - 11:00 am
Sponsored by Bayer Animal Health
“Leadership Lessons I've Learned as a Player, a Business man, and a Father"

This promises to be an inspiring and thought-provoking session. Our keynote speaker is all-American and NFL quarterback Archie Manning, who transcends his athletic achievements.  People far and wide have been inspired by his warm personality, his drive and sense of humor.

Recognized as a 14-year veteran quarterback and father of two Super Bowl champion quarterbacks, Peyton and Eli, Manning believes the greatest rewards don’t come from winning the game they come from playing the game. His other principles for success are leadership, depending on others and being flexible.  Manning takes these lessons, along with countless others, to inspire audiences to achieve greatness in their journey for personal and professional success.

2014 CattleFax U.S. & Global Protein & Grain Outlook Seminar

Wednesday, February 5 - 8:00 am- 10:00 am
Sponsored by Purina Animal Nutrition LLC
and Zoetis Animal Health
Ticket Price: $40.00 per person
New- this session is now included with your 4-day registration

It's becoming a global marketplace for beef. With China emerging as the world's largest meat  importer. Brazil continuing to expand beef production and India taking a larger role in the beef trade globally, the U.S. is part of a world beef market that is increasingly volatile.

International forces are only one piece of the picture for U.S. cattle producers, however. Corn supplies have increased, yet prices remain volatile. The effects of a widespread drought are also having an impact. So are changing U.S. consumers and their evolving demands. Energy prices and industry contraction are factors. Add to that an economy struggling to come out of a slump and large investor positions in the futures market, and you're beginning to get the idea. We're a complex industry.

Always, one of the Convention's most popular sessions, this CattleFax seminar will explore the factors that influence the profitabilityof your operation, and provide a look forward to what cattle, beef and feed prices might look like in the future. To top it off, Art Douglas, Ph.D., of Creighton University will provide a long-term weather outlook.

For cattlemen, it's a program that's always informative, and increasingly valuable.

All checkoff committee members are encouraged to attend this session to better understand the fundamentals of, and trends in, the marketplace.
