Audio with Jerry Effertz, Past Chairman
Looking back on his one-year term as chairman of the Federation of State Beef Councils, Jerry Effertz says the checkoff has worked hard to honor the state and national concept behind its work.
“It’s both an asset and a liability. Our states are individual states. And our beef councils that work within those states, just like the producers who produce cattle there, are also individual. So one size does not fit all. And we have to craft those programs and those initiatives to work within that state/national partnership to get the biggest bang for our buck, but at the same time accommodating what the producers feel is appropriate, while at the same time reaching out to consumers.” (39 seconds)
A cow-calf producer from central North Dakota, Effertz says the checkoff has always been about the grassroots producers.
“Involvement is the key word. This convention is a prime example of that, and I’m extraordinarily proud of my role with the Federation in terms of reaching out and involving individual producers. When they have the opportunity to come to a convention like this they actually get to sit down and be involved in the process. And it doesn’t matter if you’re from Texas, or from North Dakota or Michigan, we respect you, and that involvement is the key to our success.” (35 seconds)
The final word Effertz wants to leave as he steps down from Federation leadership is that those who are stepping up to lead the effort are keeping their eyes on the ball.
“We first of all appreciate producers providing the checkoff, but secondly through a variety of programs we work every single day to provide producers with the best bang for the buck. That the checkoff dollar is going into the marketplace to promote beef; that ultimately comes back to benefit the producer, and educate the consumer about the value of beef.” (32 seconds)

The Federation of State Beef Councils is a division of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, which is a contractor to the Beef Checkoff Program. The beef checkoff is overseen by volunteer checkoff payers on the Cattlemen’s Beef Board, with final approval of projects provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
