A New Day in the Sun at the 2009 Convention and NCBA Trade Show

2006 News Archive

On Tuesday afternoon, USDA and the Office of U.S. Trade Representative announced that China had committed to take action on several key trade issues. These positive developments include a tentative agreement to resume imports of U.S. beef. With cattle prices slumping and cattlemen working hard to build market share overseas, China’s action comes as great news to NCBA President Mike John of Huntsville, Missouri.

Cut #1         :16          Outcue: "...sagging beef market."

China was the 7th largest export market (by value) for U.S. beef in 2003, with purchases totaling about $120 million. But John says China’s population and growing economic status gives the market tremendous potential for the future.

Cut #2         :16          Outcue: "...providing it for them."

While the current stalemate with Japan draws most of the news coverage, the announcement regarding China shows that the United States is making progress in regaining market access. John added that it is very important that when trade resumes, it is based on sound scientific principles.

Cut #3         :28          Outcue: "...continue to push for that."

NCBA... working to increase profit opportunities for cattle and beef producers by enhancing the business climate and building consumer demand.
