USDA announced late Friday that a cow previously testing negative for BSE has now tested positive under a different testing method. Terry Stokes, CEO of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association NCBA), responded to the announcement by saying that a definitive test is needed quickly.

Cut #1  :15           Outcue: "...as quickly as possible."

Stokes expressed his confidence in the aggressive BSE testing process that USDA has undertaken, and said that other protective measures also eliminate any doubt in the safety of U.S. beef.

Cut #2  :31           Outcue: "...any risk to BSE."

Stokes said key trading partners such as Japan should not be concerned over this situation, especially since it involves an aged animal. Negotiations to re-open beef export markets involve beef from younger cattle that are not at risk for BSE.

Cut #3  :21           Outcue: "...product from BSE."

Stokes concluded by reiterating the need for quick resolution on the testing sample, to minimize disruption and confusion.

Cut #4  :16           Outcue: "...as quickly as possible."
