Letter from Cattlemen`s Beef Board Chairman and NCBA`s Chairman -- October 1, 2001

Dear Beef Industry Friends:

Time flies when you’re busy -- the national beef checkoff program is 15 years old in October 2001! As many of you know, this industry-wide volunteer-directed program was designed to boost beef demand through state and national coordinated efforts. Since October 1986, a lot of industry folks all across America have worked diligently to make the program work the way it was intended. How did we do? We believe beef producers have a right to know, and that’s a good reason to post results front and center for all to see.

This packet highlights just a few of the individual national projects conducted with checkoff dollars over the past 15 years. Remember – only half the money collected by state beef councils goes directly to the national Beef Board. The other half – 50 cents of every dollar – is controlled by producers in that state. In other words, this packet tells only half the story. We encourage you to contact your state beef council to learn more.

It is difficult to condense a 15-year history into a packet this size! Checkoff efforts have focused on research and promotion projects too numerous to chronicle in their entirety. But they have been chronicled -- give Joe Snyder at the Beef Center a call at 303-694-0305 for more information, or if you would like an emailed version of these articles. You should also know these articles are available on the www.beefboard.org Web site.

We hope you are as excited to be part of this industry today as we are. Let’s continue to work together as beef producers to strengthen it!

 Sincerely,

Dan Hammond, American Falls, Idaho
Chairman, Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board

 Lynn Cornwell, Glasgow, Montana
Chairman, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association
