Suggested Lead: Last week USDA announced plans for a national animal ID program that would begin as voluntary, but become mandatory in 2009. Mike John of Huntsville, Mo., president-elect of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA), says NCBA strongly supports development of an animal ID program, but feels private industry should lead the way.

John explained that a privately-controlled system can better ensure confidentiality and added value for livestock producers.

But he also emphasized that NCBA wants to work cooperatively with USDA, not in conflict.

John added that the system should not focus solely on cattle.

If done correctly, John feels that Animal ID can definitely add value and bring a positive return to livestock producers.
