Nov. 25, 2003 - Congress Chooses to Delay Labeling Implementation

Congress over the weekend passed an omnibus appropriations package that delays the adoption of mandatory Country of Origin Labeling until September of 2006. Jim McAdams, vice president of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, says the time delay provides opportunity for improvements.

McAdams, who is a beef producer from Adkins, Texas, says beef producer members and NCBA directors this summer requested the NCBA to move in this direction.

Among the problems identified with the current law is the exception of poultry, as well as all foodservice, processed and frozen beef items.
