October 28 2003 - NCBA Submits Comments on Upcoming Nutrition Guidance
Yesterday the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association provided comments to the U.S. Department of Agriculture on that agencies proposed nutrition guidelines. Leah Wilkinson, associate director for food policy at the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, the USDA Food Guide Pyramid was a good effort at providing nutrition guidance to consumers.
Cut #1 :17 Outcue: "...of the Pyramid."
Wilkinson says that for the new effort, the government has been getting away from the Pyramid concept.
Cut #2 :16 Outcue: "...understand and utilize."
Unfortunately, the Pyramid didn’t fulfill all nutrition education needs.
Cut #3 :32 Outcue: "...that they will use."
Among the 16 pages of comments submitted by NCBA were concerns that USDA may not be incorporating the most up-to-date information about beef. This information was included in the comments.
The USDA hopes to have the new food guide completed after the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans are finalized. That’s scheduled to happen in January, 2005.
