October 8, 2003 -WTO Failure Could Affect other International Trade Efforts

Failure to make progress at WTO talks in Cancun last month could have far reaching ramifications.  Gregg Doud is chief economist for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.  He says talks with Australia on a free trade agreement may be impacted by the inability to move forward on global trade issues.

According to Doud, it’s a matter of fairness.

Cut #2     :23        Outcue: "...can deal with this."

Doud says Australians and others looking for free trade agreements with the U.S. recognize the NCBA stance on the issue.

Cut #3     :20        Outcue: "...have input on this."

According to Doud, the work being done on the international front are a long-term effort.

Cut #4     :29        Outcue: "...absolutely do pay off."

The World Trade Organization talks in Cancun concluded on September 12.
