Statement by Wythe Willey on Senate Passage of Drought Relief Legislation

“It is comforting to see this drought is finally getting the attention it deserves.

The drought is a natural disaster, just like a hurricane, tornado, earthquake or flood, and this legislation will provide much-needed relief for livestock producers who are suffering through the worst drought conditions our country has seen in decades. 

“While the timing of this bill comes on the heels of the Farm Bill, many observers mistakenly believe this disaster assistance is not needed.  It is important to note that the Farm Bill doesn’t address natural disasters for livestock producers suffering through the drought.  Congress has tried to be fair with the Farm Bill, but nature isn’t always fair.  This drought has created a serious financial hardship for livestock producers.

“The 79-16 vote today in the Senate is truly a show of bipartisan support for ranchers and farmers, and we applaud the efforts of Montana Senators Max Baucus and Conrad Burns for coming to the aid of one of America’s greatest and most fundamental industries.

“NCBA’s leadership and members will continue to work with the Congress and the Administration to find ways to help America’s beef producers deal with the drought.”
