Thurs, Nov. 14 02 -- Ground Beef Options Now Qualify for Lean Designation

Suggested Lead:

There’s good news on the ground beef front, according to Mary Young, executive director of nutrition for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.  She says some ground beef can now be promoted as a healthy meat alternative.

Cut #1    :14       Outcue: "...guidelines for lean."

According to Young, the designation is more than just window dressing.

Cut #2    :31       Outcue: "...and B-vitamins."

Young says that because so much beef is sold in ground form, this change will mean something to both cattle producers and consumers.

Cut #3    :40       Outcue: "...loaded with micronutrients."

The news of the new ground beef lean qualifications was promoted through the checkoff to more than 11,000 dietitians at the American Dietetic Association Annual Convention in Philadelphia last month.
