Title: Dietary Guidelines Committee Holds its Fourth Meeting

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans series is the foundation of federal nutrition policy. The first edition of the Dietary Guidelines was released in 1980 and since then, every five years the Dietary Guidelines are jointly updated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Guidelines advise Americans on food and beverages that promote a healthy, balanced diet.

Every five years members of the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee are appointed by HHS and USDA. It is a group of experts in the fields of nutrition and health. These individuals are tasked with reviewing the newest scientific and medical research and based on their review, prepare a report for the Secretaries with their recommendations. This report serves as the foundation for the policy determining the next edition, in this case the 2015 Dietary Guidelines.

On July 17-18, the Committee held its fourth public meeting for the 2015 guidelines via webinar. USDA has mentioned there will be at least one or possibly two more meetings before they finalize the report to the Secretaries. During the meeting, the Committee discussed the topic of sustainability in terms of “lifestyles” and also discussed research around red meat in the diet. NCBA has been engaged in the 2015 Dietary Guidelines for several years on behalf of our membership. We also submit comments for the Advisory Committee to consider on the latest nutrition research like the Beef in an Optimal Lean Diet (BOLD).

We will continue to be engaged throughout the process, but it is important that you are also involved. To learn more about the Dietary Guidelines visit beefusa.org or dietaryguidelines.gov
