Without question, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has given U.S. beef a strong advantage over other countries in competition for North American consumers. Today, Canada and Mexico are two of the leading importers of U.S. beef. Duty-free access and close proximity are two of the main reasons why Canada and Mexico are such strong markets for U.S. beef.


  • In 2012, Canadian consumers purchased 180,000 metric tons of U.S. beef at a toal of $1.17 billion, making it the largest export market in sales of U.S. beef.
  • In 2012, the U.S. imported over 786,000 head of Candian-born cattle.


  • In 2012, Mexican consumers purchased approximately 193,000 metric tons of U.S. beef at a total of $822 million, making it the third largest export market ins ales of U.S. beef.
  • In 2012, the U.S. imported nearly 1.46 million head of Mexican-born cattle.
