Below is the most recent drought status update for the U.S. Drought conditions persist in the Southern Plains and the Desert Southwest. Dryness has also expanded in California and portions of the Great Basin. Dry areas have also developed in some areas of the southeast.
Over the past several months drought conditions have eased considerably in eastern Montana and the Dakotas.
Over the past weekend some much needed rainfall took place across Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and some areas of Colorado. However, rainfall amounts fell short of breaking the drought in those areas.
The graphic below shows drought changes over the past three months. Yellow represents increased drought when green areas show drought improvement.
The Southern Plains, Southern Rockies and portions of the far west will need much more spring precipitation and early summer precipitation to have any significant drought relief.
